I have finished my Mini I Spy quilts and love them. I love that these quilts are easy for my kids to hold and carry around. My daughter has been sleeping with hers, she loves all the girly fabric. (This is a mini version of this I Spy Quilt.)
Each quilt has 30 squares of fabric, 2 of each kind for matching. Each square is 4×4 inches once sewn, (I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance, so I had 4 1/2 inch squares to start.) Some of the fabric is flannel and some cotton, either is fine for me.
For the back, I used a fun flannel animal pattern. It came in purple for my girl quilt and green for my boy quilt. We use the back side for even more I Spy fun searching for certain animals too.
The batting is a thin cotton batting. Then I pinned all three parts together laying it on the floor, it’s small and wasn’t not hard to do. Then I tied it together with Embroidery floss doubled up. For the binding, I used Double Bias tape and sewed around the whole thing with a zigzag stitch from my machine.
These were super easy and fun. If you come across fabric on sale (I collect this kind of stuff all the time) or just happen to have some fun fabric laying around, I highly suggest making one of these for a child!
I just got back into quilting too…and this is one I am going to make! I just did a t-shirt quilt and am having a hard time thinking of something for my little 1 year old grand daughter..this will be perfect! Thanks for your instruction. Megan – For these mini eye spy quilts, the fabric on the back is a flannel piece I got from Walmart. I have seen it at Joann’s too though. I hope you’re able to find it!

I am going to combine the girl’s and boy’s blocks into a larger quilt and give it to my friend’s son’s kindergarten teacher. The easy to follow directions were a tremendous help. Thanks for sharing. This is a definate item that I will add to my “gift” list.

Wow! These are cute. I have just made three full baby quilts and these would have been very easy. I like the way you tie them because when I take my quilt tops and backing to my quilt lady it costs me a small fortune to have her quilt them. I can’t do it on my machine. I don’t quite get how you bound them with a zig-zag I don’t think I’d get the binding on evenly. I will try and make one for my mother’s friend’s daughters baby due in October. Thanks for sharing this cute idea.

I just have to say I’m delighted to see another quilter do an I Spy quilt that has TWO of each fabric! I always thought these quilts were made to have the child find and match fabric squares, but rarely do I see anyone do it this way anymore. I’ve also made these “snuggle” sized quilts for my grandson and he loves them. Nice job – lucky kids!

How I wish I could quilt – oh yeah – even sew for that matter! My grandma was an amazing seamstress, but I never learned how. To crochet, knit, needlepoint – yes, but never to sew. Not that I think it’s too late – I just have a lot of other things going on and am probably too lazy to try something new! :) Someday, right!

Those are so cute! My friends and family are making I spy quilts, too. For ours each person makes 30 squares of the same fabric then we are going to trade them up and all get 30 different squares. I am excited to see how they turn out. Hopefully as cute and fun as yours!
